SAM Payne yesterday wrote a new chapter in his famous racing family's history when he won at his first ride.

The 15-year-old, who won aboard Murray Downs at Narrandera yesterday, is the grandson of trainer Paddy Payne, whose children are famous for their riding feats.

Eight of the 10 children became licensed riders. Sam's mother Brigid, who last year aged 36, was the eldest of the Payne children and a trailblazer for female jockeys.

The most successful family member has been Patrick, who was a multiple group 1-winning hoop before weight problems led him to focus on training.

"Sam also has a big frame, and I don't know how long he will be a jockey, but hopefully this will give him a head start in life," Patrick said.
